I'm a poet and essayist
Helen Heath’s debut collection of poetry Graft was published in 2012 by Victoria University Press to critical acclaim. Graft won the NZSA Jessie Mackay Best First Book for Poetry award in 2013 and was the first book of fiction or poetry to be shortlisted for the Royal Society of NZ Science Book Prize, also in 2013. Helen's poetry and essays have been published in many journals in New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the USA.
Her long poem sequence ‘Postcards’ from Graft was selected for Best New Zealand Poems 2012. Graft was selected for the NZ Listener top 100 books for 2012 and won a VUW Post Graduate Research Excellence Award. Helen holds a PhD in creative writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington. Helen’s thesis comprises a poetry collection and research project examining how contemporary poetry can actively participate in the interpretation of scientific ideas. Her latest book, which won the 2019 Peter and Mary Biggs Poetry Award at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards, is called Are Friend's Electric? Helen on the Academy of New Zealand Literature.
